Low Mercury Tuna not Just a Headline
The birth of Wild Planet Seafood Company

continued...

Surface Fishing Only
Wild Planet only offers young 3 - 5 yr old albacore premium tuna caught exclusively on the surface of the pristine waters of the Pacific off the coast of Oregon where mercury levels in fish are recorded as the lowest in the country. By surface fishing, Wild Planet Fisheries are sure to catch only the youngest tuna, as older tuna run deep once they begin to spawn at after age 5. This fishing technique also assures that the dolphins and other marine mammals and turtles are safe. Once onboard, the tuna are individually handled and washed and placed in a specially designed insulated fish holds with a steady temperature of 30 degrees F to preserve freshness. At this young age, these tunas haven't had time to build up elevated mercury levels like the older, larger tuna you find in cans today.

An Environmentally Preferred Fishery
The sustainability issue surrounding fisheries is the hottest issue in the seafood industry today, due to the success of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program. Whole Foods, Wal-Mart, Safeway and Earth Fare are just some of the stores making demands on their seafood providers as to the sustainable methods they follow. These demands are shaping the way many seafood providers respond. The beautiful part about this is these stores are creating the demands because of the successful pressure the consumers have placed upon them. This is truly a program that has succeeded.

The Monterey Bay Seafood Watch program has successfully coined the phrase "environmentally preferable fishery". The clear definition of this phrase is a fishery that is not harming the seas. The preferred catch method of this organization is the troll or line fishing. They don't like the nets. Wild Planet is rated as a best choice, an environmentally preferred fishery.

Wild Planet is committed to ocean ecology and works only in wild, healthy stock fisheries that do no damage to the marine habitat. Healthy oceans are the best way to provide nutrition to people and all other life on this planet. By making a balance between precious marine resources of finding sustainable balance in terms of the use and preservation of precious marine resources, they get to live their dream of having a successful business which furthers the restoration of the oceans.

Wild Planet's 18 fold risk to benefit ratio Statement

1. 6 x the omega fatty acid
2. 1/3 the mercury

That is an 18 fold risk to benefit ratio. If you want to get 5 grams of omega 3 in tuna, you can eat one can of our product, or 6 cans of the national brand. To get that, you are getting 18 times the mercury exposure.

Bill Carvalho with Wild King Salmon

The Portuguese expect a lot from seafood. It's true in Portugal and it's true at Mr. Carvalho's Wild Planet. Don't let the ordinary can deceive you; what is inside is entirely unique. In taste, nutrition and safety, Wild Planet has redefined how good fish can be. Bill forcefully says: "we feel honored to treat people to fish so potent in nutrition, it should be called a foodceutical; if that's not a word, it should be.

Appreciative customer feedback is overwhelming, when people try this product they don't go back to other brands."

If you think Bill is overstating things, well, remember he is Portuguese; or maybe seafood is just that much more important to him. When I think about it, all the recent health studies are making me think I should start thinking like the Portuguese myself.
