SAN DIEGO
OVERNIGHT ADVENTURE
. . . Amtrak provided the transportation that took me on an overnight
mini-vacation to San Diego, where I reveled in the charm of accommodations
at the Glorietta Bay Inn, and enjoyed the culinary mastery of Michael
Stebner, chef de cuisine at LOEWS CORONADO BAY
RESORT. The Stebner Dinner by the Bay was sponsored by
the San Diego County Chapter of the California Restaurant
Association. Wine and Martini's were provided by Southern
Wine & Spirits of Southern California and Young's
Market Company. It was a perfectly prepared and skillfully
served dinner, which gave cause to a standing ovation for talented
chef Stebner. Kathleen Cochran, general manager
of Loews recently introduced their new Food & Beverage Director
Andrew R. Stegen, formerly with Loews Le
Concorde Hotel in Quebec City and Le Chateau Frontenac
in Canada.
W
HOTEL, the newest brand of Starwood Hotels
& Resorts Worldwide, opened at 930 Hilgard in Westwood
with the hottest New York style party L.A. has ever seen. Stages
with Latin dancers dazzled guests, while coconut Ahi tuna ceviche,
and plantain wrapped beef taco appetizers, along with Latin inspired
cocktails named Luz del Sol and Loro Verde were served throughout
The Bar/The Living Room off the lobby entrance. The celebrity attendance
and press coverage for the spectacular opening rivaled the Golden
Globe Awards. Not even a month old it has become the trendiest place
for the beautiful (dressed in black) people to be seen. The W Hotel
restaurant MOJO, features neuvo-Latin cuisine,
skillfully prepared by Chef David Slatkin and is
run with fun by Maitre' d Albert Charvonneau, formerly
of Chasens, L'Orangerie and Le Dome. (See next issue for full review
of MOJO, and an interview with Chef David Slatkin).

Bonnie
Carroll with Chef Bruno Oger and Chef J.P.Amateau
The delightful
culinary collaboration of this talented duo highlighted the best
of both cities, and it was a magnificent culinary experience for
everyone in my party. The menu, which combined California eclectic
with Mediterranean and French influences rendered us with a total
International dining experience. The award winning Dining Room
at the Regent Beverly Wilshire is in my opinion the best run and
managed dining room in America. Service is attentive, but never
intrusive and the overall feeling of the room is elegant and delightful.
These duo chef dinners, along with regular dining at breakfast,
lunch and evening can be enjoyed all year.
