Curious Beasts 2014 "Blood" Red Blend
Winery: Curious Beasts
Grape(s): Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, & Cabernet Franc

Region: California
Year: 2014

Special Designation: n/a
Farming Certification: n/a
Price:
10-15

Review:
Haunting aromas of raspberries, cherries, gamy meat, and spice rise up from a glass. Lush red raspberry, boysenberry, and plum interweave among allusions of white pepper and game on the palate. Nice, ripe fruit is in harmony with more savory elements. It's a ideal Halloween party wine.

Bewitched 2015 Pinot Noir
Winery: Bewitched
Grape(s):
100% Pinot Noir
Region: Russian River, Sonoma

Year: 2015

Special Designation: n/a
Farming Certification: n/a
Price:
15-20

Review:
The nose uncloaks aromas of raspberries, plums, and black cherries alongside accents of cola and clove. The palate is fairly rich, with plum, cherry, and raspberry flavors mingling among hints of rose petal, cola, and spice. A good body and ample fruit make this an inviting Pinot on Halloween (or any other day).

Rating: 90

Bogle "Phantom" 2016 Chardonnay

Chardonnay
Region: Ca
lifornia
Year:
2016

Review:
Mists of pears, apples, and pineapples float with butterscotch and vanilla on the nose. Tropical fruit and apple flavors blend with butterscotch and creamy oak on the palate. Rich and a bit buttery, it's a frighteningly friendly Chard for under $20.
Rating: 89

Charles Smith 2015 "Velvet Devil" Merlot
Winery: Charles Smith
Grape(s): 100%
Merlot
Region: Washington, USA

Year:
2015

Special Designation: n/a
Farming Certification: n/a
Price:
10-15

Review:
There's a wicked combination of blackberries, black cherries, and plums, alongside a few earthy hints on the nose. The palate screams with bramble berry and dark cherry flavors that flow into expressions of minerals, herbs, and cigar box. Not the fruity, ripe wine that one might expect from a Merlot. It's fashioned in a style that will appeal to those not haunted by old world wines.
